A Day in the Food Life : Ali P. of Fit With Ali

I think that the body is like a house. You wake up in the morning and the house is cold, so as soon as possible, you need to put some logs in the fireplace to get the house warm right away. (These “logs” are a metaphor for food, btw!) Two and a half to three hours after you start this fire, the logs are all burned so you need to put more logs in the fireplace, so the house doesn’t get cold again. Two and a half to three hours after that, the logs are burned, so you need to throw in some more! This process continues throughout the day, so that by nighttime, the fire has been burning so consistently, your house stays warm even while you’re sleeping! Meaning… By eating small meals, always with protein, every 2.5 to 3 hours, you’ve turned your body into an efficient calorie burning machine. You’re metabolism is working so well throughout the day, your body is burning calories even while you sleep.

Here’s a day in my life of food.

Every night before I go to bed, I pre-prep my programmable coffee maker. I fill it with loose-leaf Sencha green tea that I get from T (Tea Shop) at the Farmer’s Market at the Grove.

I love waking up to this daily treat, that I drink as I get ready to change lives at the gym. Who knew you can brew tea in the coffee pot? What a blessing.

When I finish getting ready, around 6:20 am, I sit down at my computer to return emails, browse the old Facebook, and eat my breakfast. I pretty much always eat the same thing. One slice of Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel toast, with raw almond butter, banana, and blueberries. Actually, my friend just bought me this Organic NuttZo, so I’ve been using that instead of my normal Trader Joe’s Raw Almond Butter. I’m obsessed with this NuttZo. It contains Valencia Peanuts, Cashews, Almonds, Hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, Sunflower Seeds, and Flax Seeds! A very high source of Omega 3’s and the texture is insanely perfect. I also endorse almost all of Food For Life’s Ezekiel products.

At around 9am, I sneak into the break room while my client is warming up and have a small snack. Trader Joe’s non-fat cottage cheese, quinoa, and strawberries. Sounds like a weird combo, but I think it’s the perfect combo of protein, whole grains, and anti-oxidants. Everyone who knows me knows that I’m addicted to quinoa. It truly is the super grain of the future. It’s the only whole grain that is also a complete protein. I put it in everything; salads, eggs, and cottage cheese!

At 11:45am, I feel myself starting to lag, so I grab half of a protein bar. I either eat Pure Protein’s Chocolate Peanut Butter bar, or today I had half of an Organic Food Bar.

At 2:30, I meet my friend Melody at Real Raw Live in Franklin Village. I really enjoyed the Super Maca 3500 Raw Smoothie. It was the perfect blend of Maca 3500, brown rice protein powder, almond milk, banana, and flax seed oil.

egg white fritatta

After my 3:30pm and 4:30pm clients, I have a break and I’m famished. I heat up my egg white frittata that I made for dinner the night before. I cook this “frittata” dish quite a bit. I saute garlic in extra virgin olive oil, and throw in any veggies I have left from the Farmer’s Market. (I go to the Larchmont Farmer’s Market EVERY Sunday) This time, I had kale, tomatoes, cremini mushrooms, and kalamata olives. I usually put some fresh avocado on top, but I didn’t have any at the gym. I let the veggies and egg whites saute on the stove until it sets up a bit, then let it cook in the oven at 350 degrees until it’s firm.

I’m home at 8:00pm, and I throw together a turkey wrap. Whole Foods Pastrami Turkey, tomato, spinach, and grainy mustard. No bread or tortilla. The salty/peppery taste of this turkey is so good. My favorite way to end the day is sitting on my couch in my pj’s, while eating and watching TV. I love Food TV, The Cooking Channel, Top Chef, or Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations. There is something about watching cooking shows while eating that really makes me happy. Then I’ll watch some crappy reality shows that I’m too embarrassed to mention and head of to bed.

That’s a Day in the Food Life of Ali P!

Thanks for the props, ladies. Halie, I use the same coffee filter. I put roughly a tablespoon of tea per cup. Have a healthy day everyone!
